I confess, Spider-man is my all-time favorite super hero. My expectations are high. That being said, I did not see this film in the theatre because I was afraid to be disappointed. Boy, was I wrong. Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse was everything I wanted it to be; in fact it exceeded my expectations. From the Animation, which certainly deserved Best Animated Feature which it won at the Oscars, to the story-line, the cast, to the score, this was one well thought-out and well executed feature film. Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse was written by Phil Lord and Rodney Rothman. Phil Lord, known for his work on the LEGO movies, brought the same kind of humor to the screenplay which includes fourth-wall breaks and a unique brand of self-awareness. For example, in the first LEGO movie, the characters are not aware that they are toys being played with but the script tells otherwise; Wyldstyle says “Come with me if you want to not die” instead of, "Come with me if you want to live," which is a line from Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991) which makes it even more funny. An example from Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse is the intro with Peter Parker who gives a re-cap on his life as shown with re-created animated versions of scenes from previous Spider-man movies complete with hilarious voice-over commentary. This film really grabs you and sucks you into the storyline which is that there are other universes with other very different versions of Spider-man. The story follows Miles Morales, (Shameik Moore) a young black-Hispanic male who is bitten by (yes, you guessed it) a radioactive spider that comes out of the sewer. So, we get to see Miles awkwardly embrace his inner-spideyness. In the meantime, Kingpin’s scientists have developed a supercollider which can access other universes and walla, we are introduced to six very different versions of Spider-man, who end up in Miles’ universe. If I had to complain about something, I would say that toward the middle of the film the story has some pacing issues and I wasn’t a fan of all of the alternate universe characters. But that is nit-picking. I really enjoyed the film. As with every Marvel movie, watch until the bitter end of the credits. I bought this on 4K and much to my delight, it arrived at my house yesterday from Best Buy. Not sure how that happened because it isn’t due to be released until Tues. March 19th. The Best Buy exclusive SteelBook is only available in Blu-ray but it looks awesome. Miles is sporting his flat-black graffiti spider-suit. I opted for the 4K version instead. It was a tough decision. I will be adding a review of the extra features by tomorrow evening.

Overall, it's one of the most innovative animated films. Plus, it's Spiderman, so that didn't hurt either. An easy 10/10
